It seems like the nature has forgotten the law of gravity, and the rocks mount one over the other to form incredible fantastic structures, originating a real lunar landscape. Great defiles, imaginary temples, monumental shapes, non-existent cities. The expert say we are on a real "Karstic" scenery, (karstic is a Yugoslavian word accepted in the geological lexical to describe a calcareous or limy land.). The impressive rock called "Camorro de las Villaneras Altas", is the highest point in El Torcal, 1600 metres over sea level.
Iwas
declared "Place of National Interest" in 1.929, and Natural Park on 27th.
October 1978. It is a place of binding adventure to get lost through its
rough tracks, when visiting Antequera, and gazing at its beautiful landscape
is easy to understand what the famous Spanish writer, José María
Pemán said: it is almost imposible to believe that God did not have
a sculptural and figurative intention while creating this zone"
The vegetation in the zone is poor but varied, there is a lot of ivy, fern and lichen, which add to the rock different shades of pink and greyish so characterise from this mountain .
Amongst the many animal we can find here, we have to mention
the rabbit, the dormouse, the little mole, the fox, etc. But the animals
the visitor will find along the whole park are the different kinds of birds,
such as : eagles, vultures, jackdaws, robins, sparrows, goldfinches, etc.
Inside the park there are three special routes, perfectly well pointed
out :
RED ROUTE: It last 3,5 hours, with
a maximum distance 4,5 kms. It is the most difficult, but it is the most
beautiful.
YELLOW ROUTE: It last 2 hours, with a maximum run of 2 kms. Medium difficulty.
GREEN ROUTE: It last 45 minutes
with a short run. It is a sub-route of the yellow one.
