For centuries, man and nature have lived in harmony in the mountains
of Ojen. The Refugio de Juanar, built on the site of an old aristocratic hunting lodge, allows visitors to share the joys of life in a natural environment.

Many famous guests have sought the peace and tranquillity offered by the Refugio de Juanar, including France's General Charles de Gaulle, who came here in 1970 to finish his memoirs.

The town of Ojen became famous around the world thanks to the Ojen anise drink once made here. Today, though no longer manufactured, Aguardiente de Ojen has its place in the gastronomical history books, and in one of Picasso's picture at present in the Museum of Modern Art in Villenueve D'Ascq, France.

The Refugio de Juanar, at 2500 feet, offers its guests the chance to enjoy the unspoilt, invigorating atmosphere of the mountains without forsaking life's conforts. The Refugio can accommodate up to 55 guests. A warm welcome from the staff, comfortable lounges and terraces, excellent cuisine and perfectly appointed rooms insure a memorable, relaxing stay. Accommodation is in 20 double rooms, one single, and four suites, all with bathroom. direct-dial telephone, satellite television and room service, some of them with fireplace.

The kitchen prides itself in supplying tasty food inspired by the surrounding landscape. Game dishes are a speciality - they include marinated partridge, rabbit, venison, pheasant, quail and, during hunting season, mountain goat - as are traditional Spanish dishes such as Segovia-style roast suckling pig, lamb and roast kid, along with an array of international dishes.

El Refugio de Juanar is in the heart of one of Europe's great spots of natural beauty, where visitors can discover delicate flowers including a variety of wild orchids, and animals such as the Golden Eagle, the Eagle Owl, and the rare Spanish Ibex, which thrives in the neighbouring peaks. It is surrounded by a forest of chestnut, pine and Abies pinsapus, a species of fir tree unique to these mountains.

A visit to the Refugio de Juanar is the perfect occasion to rediscover the joys of outdoor living. The surrounding forest, with its well-marked paths and fresh air by the lung-full, is a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers. At the Refugio itself, guests can enjoy a leisurely game of tennis or a refreshing swim in the pool.

The Refugio de Juanar, set in the heart of Andalucia, is the perfect base from which to explore southern Spain, from the excitement of the Costa del Sol to the legendary cities of Granada, Cordoba, Malaga and Seville.
