ALGARROBO

Situated 190 metres over sea level and 3 kms. away from the seaside, Algarrobo stands there, white dotted with flowers, and with a marked andalusian savouriness. This is the starting point of the Route of the Sun and the Wine. Its fertile lands, bathed by the Algarrobo river coming down from the Almijara mountain range, are rich in different crops like; tomatoes, avocados, strwaberries, water melons, vine-yards and olive trees. Its origins as a settlement date from the Calclithic period. At the mouth of the river, in the place calledMorro de la Mezquitilla, different utensils like axes, copper needles, small clay figurines used as idols and remains of old settlements have been found, and all this gives credit to what we say. Dating from the VIII century B.C., the The Trayamar Necropolis, offers one of the most important historical-artistical relics in Europe concerning the Phoenician civilization. Punic and Phoenincians tombs, as well as the remains of a city established in the tenth century B.C. immmerse the visitor in the hidden misteries of the past.

With the arrival of the Arabs, the trade was highly activated in the area, thanks to the manufacture of silk and the cultivation of figs and almonds.

Narrows uneven streets which bends every where take us to places like the Square of la Gloria, the Hermitage of Saint Sebastian, that apart from its unquestionable cultural interest offers a marvellous panoramic view of the village. The Parish Church of Santa Ana and the inclined Torre Almenara from the XVI century complete the monumental set of the town.

The same as other towns nearby the seaside, Algarrobo has its own fishing village, which in the last few years has seen its physiognomy change until turning into a tourist complex. Apart from the natural attractions of the Costa del Sol, like its climate, the sun, the warm waters and all what the area around includes, it is worth the while to pay a visit to the fishing villages nearby. "Mezquitilla", with its fishing boats stranded on the sand or la " Caleta " with its picturesque s port-fishing port. Algarrobo celebrates the feasts of its Patron, Saint Sebastian, on the 20th of January, but it is in the second fortnight of August when the inhabitants of the village and numerous visitors, gather around to music, to enjoy the singing and to see the fireworks.

The goat in sauce and the fried fish are two of the delicious dishes of Algarrobo's gastronomy, but do not forget to try the tasty cakes made out of oil, flour and almonds, or the good local wine.
