Since long time ago, craftsmanship has been the human activity which
has most determined the reality of the environment in which it was developed. In Estepona however, this activity has not had a great impact
really, as more than anything else it was fishing and agricultural traditions
which enabled certain handicrafts to flourish, some of which still remain. The industrial development in the early 50's and the change of attitude
due to the tourist phenomenon, together with the rise in the cost of the
materials and the lack of available labour, lead to the lost of certain
traditional products of handicraft created for specific purposes. This
change however, should be seen optimistically, since it has contributed
to the preservation of our traditions whilst dignifying the craftsman's
creative spirit and producing a trade which is very appreciated by tourism. The following are some of the crafts in our district, the places where
these may be found and the people who currently produce such work. RIDING TACKS.........Juan Garcia Garcia, Adolfo Suarez, 15 TAPESTRY..................Lola Escarcena, Botica 4. CERAMIC...................Francisco Leoncio Gutierrez, Cerrillo 6 CERAMIC...................Rosa Martinez Lasheras, Apolo, Cancelada Distric. There is a number of other activities normally classified as crafts
which have arisen from the specific demand produced by tourism. They are
small items of craftware sold at the traditional flea-markets.
