FIESTAS

"Fiestas" or celebrations are a deep-rooted tradition in Andalusia. And so they are in Estepona, which organises several religious or secular fiestas each year.

The farming community celebrates its most important "fiesta" on 15th May, the feast of St. Isidore the farmer.(San Isidro Labrador). This actually starts a week beforehand, with a pilgrimage to a hermitage built in his name, located in Pedregales. Events include a cattle show, and exhibition of farm machinery, and of farm products, and a bullfight. A large cavalcade is a high point, when hundreds of men and women, ride along dressed in their typical costumes and accompany the wooden image of the saint as it is carried around the Old Town of Estepona.

Music and colour engulf the entire area during the first or second week of July, the "Ferias y Fiestas Mayores" - or major fairs and celebrations where the main point is to have a good time. Inside the fairground are dozens of typical "casetas", brightly decorated huts where visitors drink wine, dance and listen to flamenco music.

The fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen on 16th July is organised by the fishing community in honour of their patron saint, when fishermen and sailors carry her image through the waves as well as on land.

On 15th August, the tourists "fiesta" is held, and includes competitions, gifts, concerts, etc.
