The farming community celebrates its most important "fiesta" on 15th May,
the feast of St. Isidore the farmer.(San Isidro Labrador).This actually starts
a week beforehand, with a pilgrimage to a hermitage built in his name,
located in Pedregales. Events include a cattle show, and exhibition of farm
machinery, and of farm products, and a bullfight. A large cavalcade is a high
point, when hundreds of men and women, ride along dressed in their typical
costumes and accompany the wooden image of the saint as it is carried around
the Old Town of Estepona.
Music and colour engulf the entire area during the first or second week of
The fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen on 16th July is organised by the fishing
community in honour of their patron saint, when fishermen and sailors carry
her image through the waves as well as on land.
On 15th August, the tourists "fiesta" is held, and includes competitions,
gifts, concerts, etc.
"Fiestas" or celebrations are a deep-rooted tradition in Andalusia. And so
they are in Estepona, which organises several religious or secular fiestas
each year.
July, the "Ferias y Fiestas Mayores" - or major fairs and celebrations where
the main point is to have a good time. Inside the fairground are dozens of
typical "casetas", brightly decorated huts where visitors drink wine, dance
and listen to flamenco music.
