HISTORY OF ESTEPONA

Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, the latter being the people who stayed longer in the town, left us numerous vestiges, of which, unfortunately we keep very few, just some fortresses and watchtowers.

The historic strictness make us state that the exact date of its set up is unknown. It may be dated from the Phoenician colonization, and with much more accuracy during the Roman epoch. nevertheless, we can assure that the ancient Estepona existed long time before the Arab "Estebbuna" and "Alextebuna".

It succumb to the Arab domination in the year 1456, during a raid ordered by the King Henry IV from Castille. The knowable history of Estepona started really in that moment.
