The
most important monument in Fuengirola is, undoubtedly, The Sohail Castle,
that is the name given by the Arabs to Fuengirola, due to the ease to observe
from here the austral constellation, (Canopus), called by the Arabs "Sohail".
It is located on a hill at the entrance of the town by the south side, bordering the Fuengirola River, and its construction was ordered by Abderraman III in the year 956.
The
philosopher and writer Abderramán ben Ahmed Alhasam Sohailé,
was born in the year 1115, in this Castle.
There are not many remains from the roman epoch , part of the
famous Via Aurelia (road to Malaca, today known as Royal Gully), the Torreblanca
Termas (hot baths) and the ruins of the Aqueduct.
