Located in the very southern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, close to the town of La Línea de la Concepción and adjoined to it through a narrow sand isthmus known as "neutral ground", the rock of Gibraltar raised its 424 metres in its highest point, and its 485 hectares of surface.
The history of Gibraltar goes back to the quaternary age, numerous prehistoric vestiges have been found in the "rock", a woman a skull and several domestic utensils made of stone and silex, and connected with the musteriense age, were discovered in 1848.
A visit to the Gibraltar Museum and the change of the Guard at the Convent, in Main St. is also something you should not miss.
The name of "Kalpe" was already mentioned by roman writers Pomponio Mela and Plinio el Viejo in their books and in the year 1150 B.C, the mounts of Calpe and Abyla were well-known as the Hercules Columns.
The modern Gibraltar, with its mezcolanza of races, languagues and religions and its international dealers offers to its visitors the chance to buy goods from every part of the world at very interesting tax-less prices. Hundred of shops can be visited along Main Street.
The most remarkable tourist attractions are located on the upper part of the rock. By going up to the top by the Cable Car you can enjoy a magnificent view. A stop at the middle station will allow you to visit the Apes Den, the famous tail-less macaques native from North Africa but living in Gibraltar for centuries, and Saint Michael's Cave, with its impresive stalactites and stalagmites, situated 300 metres above sea level, it is one of the most spectacular natural grootoes in Europe.
