The shrine of the "Virgen de la Peņa" , the village's patron saint , dated from 1548, and was excavated in a big rock by the mercedaries monks to worship the Virgin, to teach the catholic faith and to redeem the captives.

Mijas has several monuments of interest to visit beside the shrine, as two Mudejar style churches, the church of the Virgin Inmaculate and the white hermitage of "El Puerto", which can be seen from anywhere in the village.
