This huge natural cave located 10 kms. from Ronda was produced by
the action of water on the chalk formations of the surrounding mountain
range.
Its two mouths have given rise to the name of the Hundidero-Gato - the Cat Gorge. The river Campobuche or Guadares enters through the Hundidero mouth, and exits through the Gato mouth, then flowing into the Guadiaro river.
Its difficult access makes it a popular venue for speleologists, although at some periods of the year this access is extremely dangerous, due to the rise in water levels.
The cave was inhabited in prehistoric times, during the neolithic and bronze ages, as evidence by various finds from these periods. The human remains found in the interior would seem to indicate that it was also used as burial ground.
