CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

This church was built on the orders of King Ferdinand the Catholic on the remains of a Moorish defensive tower, and this may account for its fortress-like appearance.

Finished in 1505, the church was consecrated to the Holy Spirit to commemorates the reconquest of Ronda on 20th May 1485, the feast of Whit sun.

Its high Gothic style is somewhat diluted by Renaissance elements and it has a single nave, 30 metres long and 9 metres wide. The interesting Baroque altar piece comprises in the upper part the depiction of the descent of the Holy Spirit, and in the centre of the Antique Virgin, in Byzantine style.

The belfry tower was added later, and the main door was subsequently enlarged.
