Founded in 1989 it has a surface of 18.592 Has. amongst the municipalities of Istan, Monda, Parauta, Ronda, Tolox and Yunquera.

Its fantastics gorges, one of which, the famous GESM Gorge, with a total depth of 1.100 metres, is the deepest in the Iberian Peninsula south side., and the third in the world. 

The rivers Rio Verde, Grande and Turon, crossed the park, where you can also find the higher mountain in the Malaga province,"El Pico de la Torrecilla" with 1.919 metres height.

The "pinsapo" (Spanish fir) is one of the park main attractions as is the only place in Europe where it grows.
