PUENTE NUEVO/PUENTE VIEJO (Old & New Bridges)

Puente Viejo, the old bridge was built in 1616, according to its accompanying inscription. The bridge is located on a small road which leads down to the Arab baths, past the Arch of San Felipe.  Despite its name, an even older bridge is located further down.

Puente Nuevo, the new bridge was built by José Martin de Aldehuela, the architect of the Bishop's Palace and the Retiro in Malaga. The bridge was finished in 1793, built on the site of a previous single arch bridge built in 1730 by Juan Camacho and José Garcia in an incredible 8 months - a record for the time. However, the bridge collapsed in 1745, probably due to faulty joints.
