The remains of prehistoric
settlement discovered in the zone, affirm that Algeciras was
inhabitted since immemorial time. Erastótenes set the zero
meridian in Algeciras which has always exerted a notable
influence upon the historic events in the whole area.
Its name comes from the ArabAl-Djezirah al Hadra, which means"green island", with a clear reference to either the rock of Gibraltar or the island on which the fortress of the town was erected.
It is to be emphasized the demographic increase of Algeciras, one of the most progressive in Spain. Algeciras is the true Capital city of the Campo de Gibraltar.
