Located
on a sandy flat surface at the very southend of the Iberian
Peninsula, bathed by the sea of the Algeciras Bay and the
Mediterranean at the West beaches. this town was born and grew
because of the ancient "Line of countervalation of the
stronghold of Gibraltar", a defense line through the
fortifications built between the fortresses of Santa Bárbara and
San Felipe which were constructed around the year 1730.
On the 20th. July 1870, the first Council of La Linea was constituted independent from San Roque, ten days later, and unanimously, the name of the town "La Linea de Gibraltar", was changed by "La Linea de la Concepción ".
Amongst its most antique archaitectonical constructions, we find the Parish Church of the Inmaculate Conception, which was consecrated on the 8th. December 1879 and the bullring which was inagurated on the 20th. May 1883.
Its golf course"Alcaidesa", is the only links course in Spain, is more reminiscent of a Scottish seaside layout, complete with heather and gorse bushes. It is worth a visit to the Municipal Museum which housed more than 200 paints by José Cruz Herrera, which were donated to the museum by the famous painter, who was born in this town.
